Green and Black’s sneaky change from vegan to non-vegan

March 3, 2009

A letter of complaint to Green and Black’s:

As a vegan, I have always been a great fan of Green and Black’s dark chocolate. I was aware that the Maya Gold and Dark Chocolate bars said that they were suitable for vegans and contained no dairy products in the ingredients, so imagine my shock when someone told me that they now contain milk powder. Since a change in recipe was never indicated on the packaging, I had been continuing to buy and consume your chocolate without reading the ingredients list each time. I do not know when the recipe changed, and I am very upset that I have been consuming animal products without realising. I will certainly never be purchasing any of your products again.

Not only am I extremely disappointed that you have changed your ingredients (as a result of which you will be losing many vegan and lactose intolerant customers), but I am angry that this change was not made clear on the front of the packets. Frequent consumers of your products may well not check the ingredients list each time once they have associated them with being vegan friendly. On your website you suggest that nothing about the products has changed as a result of the company being bought by Cadbury’s. The implication is that all products are the same as they always were. Whatever the reason for the change in ingredients, this insinuation is deceptive.

Yours faithfully,
Alex Hill (ex-customer)
